Telephoto lenses bring faraway things close, which suits birds, sports and stage shows. Longer focal length, in millimeters, means a closer view. Image stabilization helps because zooming in makes small shakes look big. They can be heavy, so try holding one for a while. A wider maximum aperture lets in more light for indoor games, but those lenses are bigger.
